Yes, you absolutely can do that. That's basically what I was saying in my other comment (in my roundabout way):

I don’t remember off hand exactly what was included in the default right sidebar but if there is something there you don’t want it can be taken out and if there is something in the left sidebar that you want in the right it can be moved. And vice versa of course.

Your so right. After I entered all the IDs, I'm thinkin' that this is a pain. Can I do this without wrecking anything: Take the code from the original right side of your template, put it back in there and then change that line of code, as you showed me above, to depth=1?

Do you get what I'm asking? =-)

Here's hoping because that would be easier.

I should probably apologize because I did know about that function but after having been to your site and saw how many subpages you had I didn't think you want to be entering all those id numbers plus id's for any future subpages that were created.

But I'm glad you spelled it out here for anyone else that this might help. :D

Also, if you can't seem to edit the hiding of sub pages through the php, I just found out that if you go into Appearance, then Widgets, then Pages, on the far right side is the option to hide certain pages by their ID. A pages ID can be accessed by clicking the Edit link for the page. The ID shows up in the address bar. Nice!

Okay I get it now. Basically yes I am saying that once widgets are added your options are limited.

Now with most of the widgets you do have the ability to change the heading and some offer other options but to do something like you want to do you're best bet would be to stick with the default sidebar which offers more flexibility.

I don't remember off hand exactly what was included in the default right sidebar but if there is something there you don't want it can be taken out and if there is something in the left sidebar that you want in the right it can be moved. And vice versa of course.

As for your Pages issue, in the default sidebar for the pages entry you'll notice it says depth=3 if you change that to depth=1 it will show only the top level pages and not show sub pages but only if there aren't any widgets being used in that sidebar.

Does this help?

I should explain better. Thanks for your patience. The pages and subpages are showing up in the sidebar. I want that. It is that I now only want the main pages to show up under the Pages in the sidebar because there are too many sub pages and I notice that those links are growing and growing down the sidebar.

I would love to edit the page level back to just the main pages.

I would also love to be able to edit the heading titles in the sidebar, such as the Pages, to something else.

So, are you saying that once widgets are added to the sidebar, I can't do these things?

Thanks again, Mina!

Linda,

I'm not sure I'm understanding completely...the pages and subpages and posts are separate issues from the sidebars.

How far off am I?

So then to bypass this issue - do you do all your edits first, such as edit the pages and subpages, then add the widget/s you want?

Thanks, Mina.

Linda,

It seems you're using widgets in the sidebars and the way WordPress works is when you add a widget to a sidebar the "default" sidebar is ignored.

In other words, if you have a widget in your sidebar then editing your sidebar.php file isn't going to have any effect.

Hope that helps.
