Wasteland Theme

I have to say that this theme is my most favorite of all of them. It was inspired by a site I saw somewhere on the net (sorry I don’t remember where). But yeah, it’s a great theme! In fact I like it so much i’m using it here on this site.

Now on to the particulars…it’s a 5 Column (main content, 2 sidebars and 2 top sections), widget-ready fixed width theme in soothing Creme and Brown colors featuring an author box, author info page, gravatars and highlighted author comments in the comments section along with Custom Archives, Sitemap and full width No Sidebars page templates. Tested in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE6 and IE7. It’s read for the new Wordpress 2.7 comment threading feature while still being compatible with older versions. And of course it’s valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1 right out of the box.

    Hi Mina,

    I love your theme, I wanted to say thanks. I also wanted to ask, how do I insert a custom field for the image in this theme? Some themes it’s the word image, others it’s img, some it’s Image, etc. What I am hoping to do is have a smaller picture on the front, that goes into a bigger picture.

    Also do I use the whole url or just the url from wp? I have played around with it, and I did read the posts here, but I did not find it.

    Thanks.

  2. Obsessiono says:

    Thanks I will try this and see if it works. Your themes are just easy to understand and really easy to work with. I again thank you for taking the time with these. They really do look great. :-)

    Thanks Mina,

    The space was already there for a title and it didn’t look right without one so I just added one, in fact it was pushed down before I added the title.

    Hi Mina, back to working on my blog. Do you know how I can make my text bar at top listing pages drop down as some pages have sub pages.

    Thanks again,
    Tammy

  7. Hi Mina,

    I would like to set up my links in the text to have underlines. Even with the different shade I don’t think the links stand out as links. What do I need to do for the links to be underlined?

    Thanks.

  8. Also, is this theme compatible with the latest Wordpress.org platform?

  9. kathy says:

    I loved the 5-column layout, and like the colors, too, but I’m using WP on my own website as a Garden blog, and wanted a more “gardeny” look. I’ve worked through most of the issues I had, but one is really puzzling me. I use the “more” tag to show excerpts on my front page. When a reader goes to the single post page, it works fine, but on the “category” pages, there is a little [...] where the more tag should be, and it isn’t clickable. The post is just cut off where the more tag should be. Any clue how to fix that?

    Thanks for your time and effort in making themes. Having spent an eternity trying to just modify one, I can appreciate what it takes.

  10. kathy says:

    Well duh! Thanks for fixing it. Appreciate the help. Still very new to WP, so sometimes the obvious isn’t quite as obvious as it should be.
    Thanks.

  11. Tammy says:

    Hello Again, thanks I will look for a plugin. In the meantime I have another question.

    I am wanting to widen the right hand side bar. How/where do I do so?

    Thanks,
    Tammy

  12. Tammy says:

    Ah Mina you are awesome! I will follow every detail to the letter. Woo Hoo! Actually, It did not even occur to me that the theme might break :(

    Thanks again,
    Tammy

    Hi,

    First of all, thanks for this beautyful theme!

    Unfortunately I got the same message like wlaer. How can I solve this problem?

  14. Mina says:

    Hey Al,

    Wow, I love what you’ve done with it! You’re site looks great. :D

    I’m emailing you a modified menu.php that will enable you to easily add the links to the top navigation bar.

    As for adding links to the sidebar, the easiest way to do that is to go to Admin >> Links >> Link Categories and create a new category. Then go into Admin >> Links >> Add New and add your links making sure to assign those new links to your new links category.

    Let me know if that doesn’t help

  15. Mina says:

    Viriatha,

    Thank you so much for that. I know you what you’re saying about authors not supporting their themes. That’s partly why I learned as much as I did…from having to figure things out myself cus I could never get any answers. :D

    I know I’m not the world’s best theme creator and I know there are going to be problems, so if I want to put themes out to the public I’d better be there to help fix those problems. That’s just the way it should be.

  16. Mina says:

    Well thank you TIm and I accept that award with much appreciation! :D

  17. Al says:

    Thanks for the help. When I mentioned adding them to the sidebar, I meant in the “pages” section of the sidebar. If can get the link in the menu.php, I think I’ll just use that though. Thanks for all your help, and I”m glad you like the design. :)

  18. Mina says:

    Hendra,

    I don’t thing there is too much that can be done, the theme isn’t compatible with versions lower than 2.6. Sorry. :(

    You might want to upgrade your WordPress to 2.7, not just for this theme but for the security of your site. Many vulnerabilities have been fixed since 2.3.3 and you wouldn’t want your site to get hacked.

  19. Al says:

    Worked like a charm! Thanks for all your help!

  20. Mina says:

    My pleasure :D

  21. Mina says:

    Hi Bob,

    I went to your site and in your post on the front page titled “Rail Rodder – Starring Buster Keaton” I saw this link: http://www.nfb.ca/newsletters/20090204. Is that what you’re referring to? In order to get that link to show up as a link and not plain text you need to add the html for a link when you’re writing the post. And WordPress makes it easy with the click of a button.

    When you are first writing a post (or editing it as the case may be) you type what you want (either a url like the above example or some text such as Click Here) then highlight it and at the top of the text editor window you’ll see a button titled ‘link’ in blue. Click that button and it will ask you for the url, enter it and click okay and your text is now a link.

    For instance your link I posted above is plain text, but if I do it following the instructions I gave you it becomes clickable: http://www.nfb.ca/newsletters/20090204

    I hope that helps. :)

  22. Mina says:

    Ken,

    Very nice! Wilton sounds like my kind of place. :D

    Yeah, the nav bar. That happened because of trying to keep things compatible with wp 2.6 and stil work with the new 2.7.

    I’m going to email you a modified version of menu.php that should take care of the problem. Let me know if it doesn’t.

  23. Ken says:

    Awesome! Thank you so much. Wilton, California is a great place…shhh..it’s a secret. :)

  24. Mina says:

    Hi Narelle,

    You’re welcome, I’m glad you like them! :D

    To edit that area go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> area1.php and change the text making sure you’re new text says between the < p >< /p > tags.

  25. Bob McPhee says:

    Yes! That did the trick. Thank you very much for your help.

  26. Mina says:

    Wayne,

    That sounds like a deeper issue. Did you try to see if you can do what you want using a different theme?

  27. Mina says:

    Hey Marlene,

    Thanks, I’m glad you like it. I’m sure you’ll be happy with it if you decide to use it.

  28. Mina says:

    Hi,

    Do you mean the text in the upper left hand side? To change that go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> area1.php and edit the text as you see fit.

  29. Mina says:

    Tina,

    Thank you and I’m glad you came on over! :D

    On to your questions…
    1) The easiet way to do this is to go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> style.css and find this line:

    .menu { float: left; width: 990px; height: 30px; margin: 0 0 5px 5px; padding: 0; display: inline; background: #514424 url(images/horz-bg.jpg) repeat; }

    And add this code: text-transform: lowercase;

    2) Go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> menu.php and find these lines (you may only have one…that’s okay):

    < ?php wp_page_menu ('show_home=1&depth=1&title_li='); ?>

    < ?php wp_list_pages('depth=1&title_li='); ?>

    And add this code: &sort_column=menu_order directly before &title_li=

    That should sort the menu items according to how you set their page order in the post editor screen.

    That should do it. :D

  30. Mina says:

    Mike,

    Wow, your site looks fantastic! Great job! :D

    Try this to move the menu bar, go into style.css and find this line:

    .menu { float: left; width: 990px; height: 30px; margin: 0 0 5px 5px; padding: 0; display: inline; background: #000000 url(images/horz-bg.jpg) repeat; }

    Change the last margin value to 0 so it looks like this: margin: 0 0 5px 0;

  31. Mina says:

    Looks like you figured it out!

  32. Mina says:

    Sorry, I missed that one.

    Go into style.css and find this line:

    a img { padding: 3px; background: none; } and add border: none; to it.

  33. Tina says:

    Oh, thank you! I messed with everything but that . . .

  34. Mina says:

    A quick trip up through the previous comments would have saved you time waiting for me to answer. :)

    But anyway, to edit that area go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> area1.php and change the text making sure your new text says between the < p >< /p > tags.

  35. Mina says:

    Dawn,

    Thank you that’s great to hear. :D

    To remove the blog title and description, go into header.php and either delete or comment out these 2 lines (down towards the bottom):

    < h1>< href="">< ? php bloginfo('name'); ?>< /h1>

    < ? php bloginfo('description'); ?>

    That’ll do it!

  36. Mina says:

    You’re very welcome!

  37. Mina says:

    Thanks for finding that Lorie. I’ll have to look into that and get an updated version out there.

  38. Mina says:

    Oh boy…I knew this day would come sooner or later. :)

    I’ll be honest, I gave up trying to use Custom Fields a long time ago because they never worked for me and the documentation and support for them is almost non-existent which really sucks.

    What it sounds like you want to do (an image inside another) is what I have going in the Soho Serenity theme…a picture inside a background image. For that I use the Get The Image plugin created by Justin Tadlock. It really is a great tool and his support for it is awesome.

    I’m really sorry I can’t help more. :(

  39. Mina says:

    Dawn,

    it’s pushing down because it wasn’t coded to have a title and for some reason the calendar doesn’t want to resize.

    Your best bet would be to resize height of the boxes so it all fits. Go into style.css and find these lines:

    Change the height to 187px
    .top-section { background: url(images/dot.gif) repeat-x scroll 0pt 100% !important; float: left; width: 780px; height: 157px; margin: 0; padding: 0; color: #444; }

    On the following 4 lines change the height to 180px
    .top-section .area { background: #ded3b7; float: left; width: 230px; height: 150px; margin-left: 5px; padding: 0; border: #d5c7a4 1px solid; }

    *html .top-section .area { height: 150px; }

    .top-section .area.extra { background: #ded3b7; width: 535px; height: 150px; margin-left: 5px; padding: 0; }

    *html .top-section .area.extra { width: 530px; height: 150px; }

  40. Mina says:

    Tammy,

    Your best bet would be to use a plugin for this. Go to the plugin repository and search for “navigation” or something similar. I know there are several but don’t know much about them to recommend any certain one.

  41. Mina says:

    Hi Edwin,

    It’s been a while since I heard from you. I take that as a good sign that things have been going okay. :D

    About your links, this is easy. Go to Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> style.css and find this line (up nearish the top):

    a:link, a:visited { text-decoration: none; color: #533419; } and change text-decoration: none; to text-decoration: underline;

    If you wanted to change the color of the links that would be color: #533419; just change the numbers to what ever value you want.

  42. Mina says:

    Yes sir it is.

  43. Yes, things have been going very well. I still love your theme. Thanks for the response.

  44. Thanks for this as well.

  45. Mina says:

    The posts are showing that little ellipsis [...] because they are set to show excerpts for that particular view. To change it go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >>archive.php and find this line:

    < ?php the_excerpt(); ?>
    and replace it with
    < ?php the_content(); ?>

    That should do it.

  46. Mina says:

    Okay Tammy, you ready? You’ll have several sections that you’ll need to make smaller so that your layout doesn’t break. So before you make any changes decide how wide you want your sidebar and then decrease the following lines accordingly (ie. if you increase your sidebar by 20px then decrease these sections by 20px).

    Go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> style.css and find the following lines:

    Decrease the width:
    #container { background: #ebe1c8; float: left; width: 530px; margin: 0 10px 0 7px; padding: 0 10px 10px 10px; }

    #top { clear: both; float: left; width: 780px; margin: 14px 0 0 0; padding: 0; background: #ebe1c8; }

    .top-section { background: url(images/dot.gif) repeat-x scroll 0pt 100% !important; float: left; width: 780px; height: 187px; margin: 0; padding: 0; color: #444; }

    .top-section .area.extra { background: #ded3b7; width: 535px; height: 180px; margin-left: 5px; padding: 0; }

    These 2 settings are for IE:
    *html #container { width: 520px; margin: 0 10px 0 2px; padding: 0 10px 10px 10px; }

    *html .top-section .area.extra { width: 530px; height: 150px; }

    Increase the width to the size you want:
    #right_sidebar { background: #ebe1c8; width: 210px; float: right; margin: 0 5px 20px 0; padding: 0 auto 0 auto; vertical-align: top; }

  47. FaBRiK says:

    What I forgot: I get this when I click on one of the Categories.
