Wasteland Theme

wllink

I have to say that this theme is my most favorite of all of them. It was inspired by a site I saw somewhere on the net (sorry I don’t remember where). But yeah, it’s a great theme! In fact I like it so much i’m using it here on this site.

Now on to the particulars…it’s a 5 Column (main content, 2 sidebars and 2 top sections), widget-ready fixed width theme in soothing Creme and Brown colors featuring an author box, author info page, gravatars and highlighted author comments in the comments section along with Custom Archives, Sitemap and full width No Sidebars page templates. Tested in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE6 and IE7. It’s read for the new WordPress 2.7 comment threading feature while still being compatible with older versions. And of course it’s valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1 right out of the box.

2. Mina says:

Thank you, glad you like it! πŸ˜€

3. Lisa T. says:

I’m using this on my site as well. I like it a lot. Any chance you might create something similar to the Gothic Twitch theme in the future? I am absolutely in love with it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know you have some lovely themes.

4. Mina says:

Lisa,

Thank you! πŸ˜€ I really appreciate hearing that.

As far as the Gothic Twitch theme, what makes that theme special (at least to me) is the graphics and unfortunately I didn’t come up with those. I wish I had that sort of artistic talent. Who knows though, someday I might just get there.

But with that said I do have another theme currently in the works. It should be ready soon as I was working on it in conjunction with this one. And yet another one that’s drastically different than any of my themes to date currently rolling around my brain.

So yeah, who knows what will come in the future! πŸ˜€

5. Lisa T. says:

Well, I’m excited to see what you come up with. I’m picky about themes. I like simple with an ornate flourish here and there if that makes any sense. Like a doodad in between messages or things that look wrought iron-ish at the corners and some sort of thingy by categories and links (like my technical terms? πŸ˜€ ). But sometimes folks go overboard with that stuff and it can become cluttered. The Gothic Twitch theme is a great balance of clean with some flourishes.

If you ever decide to do custom work, I’d be interested in working something out. Take care.

Lisa – I love your technical terms! And I get exactly what you mean. You might also like the theme I’m currently doing (working name…Miscellany). It actually does have some wrought iron-ish doodads in the corners…especially if you squint. πŸ˜€

Offering custom work is something I’m considering but I feel I need a bit more experience. But if there is something I can help with I’ll do my best.

Dan – Thank you very much! πŸ˜€

Indeed, this is a great theme. I’ve been considering updating my theme, and this theme has enough great ideas that I may just adopt it πŸ™‚ My theme color is green, though, so a few tweaks might be in order! That’s one of the great things about WordPress, it’s so simple to completely personalize.

13. Mina says:

Hey Tim,

I know exactly what you mean about WordPress…that’s why I love it so much. It can do anything you need it to do. πŸ˜€

I like this theme alot. I am having trouble with the author box. it does not want to show up on my maion page. Is there something I am doing wrong?

16. Mina says:

Ray,

The author box wasn’t meant to be on the main page. It’s purpose is to give info about the author when a specific post is clicked on. It’s generally used with multi-author sites.

17. Ray Terry says:

Ok thanks for the reply. Where do you put the info about the author so it shows up when a post is clicked on?

18. Mina says:

It pulls it from your WordPress user profile.

Go into the Dashboard >> Users >> “Your User Profile” >> Biographical Info.

19. David Beroff says:

Hi, Mina!

A friend asked me to set up a blog for him, (above), and I spent some time at the WordPress.org site looking for just the right theme. Since I’m posting here, I’m sure you can guess which one I picked. πŸ™‚ Anyway, I’m kinda new to this WordPress stuff, and I couldn’t even find the link to the instructions/documentation/FAQ where I would find these answers, so I apologize in advance for asking you directly, but, well, I’m stuck.

1. How do I get the mixed capital letters to show correctly in the line, “Huge Health Secrets Blog”, right at the very top? Yes, the tagline is set correctly in wp-admin/options-general.php .

2. Where do I configure the “Welcome To Our Site…” paragraph? (Hrmm, looks like a mixed cap issue there, too.)

Thank you so much for your help! πŸ™‚

— David (at) Beroff (dot) com

20. Mina says:

David,

I think you made a good choice. Welcome to the wonderful world of WordPress! πŸ™‚ And never apologize for asking questions…how else do we learn? So to answer your questions…

1. Go into style.css and find this line:

.header .description { width: 500px; margin: 0 0 0 60px; padding: 0; font-size: 1.5em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Georgia; color: #3f3013; text-align: left; text-transform: lowercase; }

Then delete this part only and save the file: text-transform: lowercase;

2. This one is a 2 parter. Go back into style.css and down near the bottom find:

.top-section .area h2 { color: #444; font-size: 1.2em; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 5px auto 5px auto; padding: 3px 3px 3px 7px; text-align: left; background: transparent; border-bottom: #7c7953 1px solid; width: 95%; }

As with #1 above find and delete: text-transform: uppercase; Save the file.

To add your own text in that section go into area1,php and replace what I’ve got there with whatever you want.

3. There was a recently discovered “oops” (totally my mistake) in the code that causes the blog title to not show up in IE. To fix that go back into style.css and find this line:

.header h1 a { text-decoration: none; color: #3f3013; text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden; }

Now delete these parts only and save:

text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden;

That should do it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

21. Ray says:

Hello,
I really like the theme styling, however while trying it out I found an issue I can’t figure out.

I fount If I add the Tag Cloud widget to the right sidebar, the left sidebar seems to have replaced the right sidebar, and the right sidebar just disappears. The Tag Cloud widget does appear on the right with the contents of the left sidebar. I tried some of the other widgets and I get the same result.
Using WP 2.6.5

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?
Thanks

22. Mina says:

Ray,

I’m not able to duplicate that issue on my 2.6.5 install, I’m a bit lost here. Do you have a link so I can see the problem?

Where did you download the theme from? Was it from the official WP theme directory or another site? Reason is that there are other sites out there that are getting themes, modifying them (someitmes maliciously) and then redistributing them on their sites. I only submit my themes for download from the WP site. Or if you did download from WP.org maybe somehow the download got corrupted. Can you download and install a fresh copy?

My next question would be concerning plugins…sometimes they have adverse affects on things. If you do have any activated maybe try deactivating them and then reactivating one by one to see if that could be the problem.

Please keep me informed on how this goes. If this is a bug with the theme, I’ll have to get a fix for it.

23. Sneddo says:

It took me a lot of trial and error to find a theme that I really love. Wastelands is definately the one for me. Great job. I love this theme

24. Mina says:

Well thank you, I appreciate that! πŸ˜€

25. AprilTara says:

LOVE this theme. It was very easy to customize and I like the layout.

I’m having a problem using the “Search” form. I tried using the Search widget but I’m guessing that adding widgets to the left sidebar is overriding something and keeping “searchform.php” from working.

Any ideas how I can get the search form to show up?

26. Mina says:

April,

Glad you like it!

Yeah, the search widget thing was a bug that showed up after the theme was made public. I just submitted a fixed version to the Theme Directory today but they have to review it before it will be available. With that said, I’m emailing the updated version (zip file) to you at the email you used here. Please let me know if you don’t get it or if you have any other issues.

27. Mike says:

Love it!

Hello, I’m new to WP and am in the early stages of building a new site. In the process, I’ve tried dozens of themes, and must say that the Wasteland theme is fantastic for what I need.

I have run across one issue, that I’m sure is an easy fix, and probably something on my end. Using IE7, the Blog Title doesn’t show up, just the tag line. How can I correct this?

Also, I noticed that your Wasteland has a different header BG/image. Is this a customization, or standard with the new version?

Thanks for your work, Mike

28. Mina says:

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the WordPress World, it can be an amazing place!

Yeah, the missing blog title is a bug that was discovered after the initial release. It’s been fixed in the latest release. It’s been submitted and I’m waiting for WP to approve it. It’s an easy fix but I’ll go ahead email you a zip file of the newest version since it’s compatible with 2.7 and the currently available version isn’t.

The header was me getting “creative”, but the powers that be at the Theme Directory want themes to utilize the wp standard blog title and description. The only difference between the header here and the one included in the download is the text.

29. Mike says:

Thank you Mina, for the very quick response. It looks great now.

Keep up the nice work.

30. Mina says:

My pleasure!

31. Marc says:

I like your theme, too. Seems to me, though, that the teeny little smiley at the bottom ought to be a secret link. =) via the dashboard, of course.

Count me in for an zip if it’s gonna be a long time to get the new version up at WP. If it’s not a bother. Thanks.

32. Mina says:

Marc,

I’ve emailed you.

That little smiley face creeped me out no end when I first saw it. I had no clue what is was at the time. Then I dumped IE and switched to Firefox and never saw him again!

But since it was brought up I figured I let people know how to get rid of it. For anyone who doesn’t know the creepy little smiley guy at the bottom of your site (only shows when you’re not logged in) is part of the wp-stats plugin. To make him go away just add img#wpstats{display:none} somewhere in your style.css.

33. David Beroff says:

Thank you, Mina!

OK, I commented out all three text-transform’s. (I figured if I didn’t like two of the cases, I probably wouldn’t like the third, once I eventually found it.) Commented out the text-indent/overflow parts and added the img#wpstats for MSIE. Updated area1 appropriately. I also figured out commenting out the height’s in the top-section once I saw the area1 text now overflowing the original intended space (into invisibility). See link above for new appearance.

Also got a gravatar. πŸ˜‰

May I respectfully suggest that you make things like this (especially the area1 text) end-user configurable? This would help because: 1. End-users could modify these items without having to involve a tech person, and, 2. Once the theme gets updated in the future, some/all of these changes will get overwritten.

Thanks again!

34. Angelo says:

I love this theme however I have trouble with displaying my site on Internet Explorer. It shows the title fine on Firefox, Chrome, Safari just fine, but not on Internet Explorer for some reason.

Anyone have an idea why? Other themes show the title on all browsers but not this one. Did I break something here?

35. Angelo says:

Hmmm… just found the tread that tells me about the elusive zip file to fix the title issue.
Can I have that file too please?

Thank you!

36. Mina says:

David – I thought you disappeared, it’s been a while. Love your gravatar! πŸ˜€

I almost hate to say this after all the work you’ve done, but there is an updated version waiting to be approved by WordPress. Let me know if you want it now.

As for area1 and area2, they were originally supposed to be for little tidbit things. But I do see your point and will take your suggestion into consideraton, but to be honest I think you’re only the 2nd person to want those areas to expand. But yeah, this is valid.

Angelo – I’m glad you like it and the disappearing title in IE was a bug. In case you come here first, I’ve emailed you. πŸ˜€

37. David Beroff says:

Yeah, sorry for the delay. The client hadn’t returned to the project since I worked on it last, so I just nudged him yesterday, which also reminded me to take a look at this page to see your earlier response. As for the gravatar, um, thanks. Now it’s your turn to show your face. πŸ˜‰

No worries; there was no huge effort. In fact, I almost *expected* to have to redo it, especially since I’d seen that you’d already updated the files. Thus, my comment about making things like this configurable. But nothing wrong with learning. πŸ™‚ It’s been quite a while since I’d gotten my hands dirty; it feels good. So, sure, pop me the new tarball, please.

– David (at) Beroff (dot) com

38. Jon says:

I love this theme! The only thing I’m confused about right now is the area1 text. I understand that it must be manually changed in the area1.php file, but I’m trying to offer this theme as an option for a multi-blog website. Unfortunately, the users at the site won’t have the ability to edit this file manually (and only 1 copy of the theme will exist anyway, so that eliminates the option totally).

So I guess where I’m going is: any ideas on how to get around this? Can I remove the area1 section all together?

Like I said, I love the theme and will be using it on my blog (on the multi-blog site) assuming I can get it working. πŸ™‚ Thanks!

39. David Beroff says:

Thanks for the zip file, Mina.

Perhaps the answer for the area1 section is to have it draw its content from a page with a specific (uncommon) name, e.g., wasteland-area1 or something. That would also address Jon’s concern by allowing each user to configure their info separately, (I think).

— David (at) Beroff (dot) com

40. Dan says:

Hi. I am a noobie using your Wasteland theme to build my page. I would like to add your “main sidebar” from Lunatic Fringe to the Wasteland theme to give me one more place to add widgets at the bottom of the content column.

Is that possible?

I coped the programming from Lunatic and created a new file in Wasteland that was identical. I also copied the programming from the Lunatic theme stylesheet into the Wasteland stylesheet.

Nothing happened. I didn’t hurt anything, apparently, but did not get the result I wanted.

Can you guide me?

41. Mina says:

Jon – That is the only thing I do not like about MU, is the inability for blogs to edit template files. I understand why it’s that way, but it is a drag. So yeah, to use in a multi-blog platform both area1 and area2 would have to be removed.

By the way, I’ve emailed you the updated zip file.

David – Your solution could work (although the programming for that is a little beyond my abilities) but only if there were a few blogs using that theme. To edit the template files in a multi-blog platform you basically need access to the server the site is sitting on.

Dan – I couldn’t see much at your site, it says I need to login. But the reason nothing is happening is that you need to add the sidebar to the functions.php file so that it gets recognized. It doesn’t seem like the site is letting me post the code so I’ll send that fix along with the updated zip file in an email.

42. Jon says:

Mina,

Thank you so much. I have to say, I’ve never seen customer service like this…even from a company from which I’ve bought a product or service. πŸ˜‰ I really appreciate your help.

43. David Beroff says:

”To edit the template files in a multi-blog platform you basically need access to the server the site is sitting on.”

Right. That’s why I thought that this might be better accomplished with a WordPress page, which is maintained in the database, rather than a file. It would allow the end-user to maintain it with the existing WordPress interface, plus, in Jon’s case, each user would have their own namespace, so they could each have a unique page with the same name.

— David (at) Beroff (dot) com

44. Mina says:

Jon – You’re Welcome! πŸ˜€ I try to give the kind of service that I myself want to receive.

David – Ah I get you. That’s sounds good, but I have no idea how you would implement that.

45. Just started using this theme and really like it. I’m having trouble with the search widget. It won’t seem to work.

I noticed someone asked about it above and you sent a correction file to them. Could you send that to me as well.

Thanks

What’s wrong?
(Sorry for my bad English and thank you for great design)

50. Marc says:

Thanks for the e-mail, Mina. And I second what David B says about your area1. I for one really like that little bit of real estate with the calendar next to it. I like the position that it has on the page. I really like how AprilTara modified hers.

I just thought of a question, too. Sorry for askin’ without trying to figure it out myself…. What is the simplest way to change the hue of the background? I might want it a little more reddish, or something.

How about a page of just little gravatars or links to pages that are using this theme? You could even throw in a link to the latest (and possibly not yet downloadable from WP) version of the theme. With a changelog, too?

Hmmm, and how do I center the text above the calendar (it’s a little shifted to the right)?

51. Marc says:

so I like things centered… Like for example, the stay at home dad… the books on the left sidebar… what’s the best way to go about centering items in a widget?

52. Marc says:

And how about this one… probably the same place, but I’ll ask anyway…. Edwin’s page has books on the right sidebar. those are centered, but the text underneath them is not. How would he center that text, or how would he adjust the margin so that the book title doesn’t start on the very left edge of the shaded sidebar area? (I liked the post about foul language, by the way)

Sorry for the second comment, i’ve accidentally wrote the wrong email.

55. Mina says:

wlaer – That’s a problem with translations. I’ve emailed you about this. And you’re english is fine. πŸ˜€

Marc – Okay, where to start. πŸ™‚
1) The background…did you mean the brown or the beige where the content is? The brown background is an image and you can either use a new image or use a graphics program to play around with it until you get what you want. The line of code for that is:

body { margin: 0; font-size: 76.5%; text-align: center; vertical-align: top; background: #3f3013 url(images/body-bg.jpg) repeat; color: #444; }

If you mean the beige part the code you would go thru style.css (mainly the #main_content, #container and #container_wide sections) and change any reference to #ebe1c8 in background: #ebe1c8; to what ever color you want. There are a ton of sites that show colors and their corresponding codes out there.

2) To gather all the sites using this theme would take more time than I have right now. And as soon as WP gets around to approving the updated version it will be linked in this post.

3) The code for the text above the calendar is:

#wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0 5px 20px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 14px; }

Play with the margin setting until it’s where you want it to be. The order of the settings for the margin are top – right – bottom – left.

4) Centering things in widgets, for me at least, is tricky especially if they are plugins. I usually just play around with the sidebar codes until I get it right. Yeah I know, that’s a pretty cheesy answer but unfortunately that all I got. πŸ˜€

5) See answer #4. But I will say for something like this I wouldn’t touch “margin” settings but would adjust “padding” settings.

56. Mina says:

Shannon,

It’s a glitch in the code of the older version of the theme. I’m going to email you a copy of the updated version that hasn’t yet been approved. It should fix that issue. If not let me know.

57. For some reason, I did not receive the e-mail. Could you please resend.

Thank you for your patience. And sorry for any inconvenience.

Try sending it to ecroz@bellsouth.net.

58. By the way, so you don’t have to go searching through the posts, this was about the Search issue.

Thanks again.

59. One more question:

Is there a way to organize my “Links Categories” so that in my link widget I can put the categories in a certain order, or do I just have to figure out some way to alphabetize the names?

60. Michael says:

This is truely an amazing theme and I have no doubt in my mind that my first try on a wordpress site setup will use this theme. Looking forward to play around with it.

61. Mina says:

Edwin – I’ve emailed the update to you at the address you provided. If you don’t get it, please let me know. I also answered your links question in the email.

Michael – Thank you so much, hope you enjoy it. As you may have realized, there is an updated version of the theme which I have emailed to you.

62. Jamie says:

Hi Mina,

Love this theme and wanted to add my thanks to the list. Of course, I’ve got the same problem as many of the above with IE. In fact my work still force me to use IE6! If you could email the latest version I would really appreciate it!

I’m working on an extra page on my site. If you take a look you’ll see it’s being set up as a resource for people interested in Mental Health issues. Whilst doing this though, I have come across a lot of people interested in how to get things started with a website. I’m going to go through the details of WP etc but also give a special mention to the people that have volunteered their time to help my site look better. You’ll be high on that list!

Regards,

Jamie

63. Mina says:

Jamie,

I’ve emailed you. πŸ˜€

64. Thanks for the update Mina. The search feature is now working.

One more question. Apparently, when using the categories as a drop down menu, it makes the selection bar as long as your longest category title. On my blog, that causes it to actually hang off the side of the template. Is there a way to just set the size of that drop down menu selector so it fits into the template no matter how long my category titles are?

Thanks for your work.

65. Sorry for more questions.

How do I get the picture I want to show up in the author box. There is no option in the profile page to upload a picture.

It looks like it is a “gravatar” thing. I’ve set one up two different times but it doesn’t ever seem to work.

Can you help me with that?

66. Mina says:

Edwin,

To be honest about the drop down box, I’m not sure. I’m not totally up on the workings of widgets. I can look into it, but right now I can’t say. I will get back to you on this.

Correct, the author box photo is a gravatar. Gravatar.com works off email addresses. So to use them you have to be sure that the email address associated with your user profile is also the email address you use for setting up the gravatar.

67. Thanks for the help. As you can see, I got the gravatar thing working.

Don’t spend too much time fretting about the category thing.

Thanks again.

68. Mina says:

Wow, your site is looking good!

Gravatars had me going for a while too. I couldn’t figure out why mine would show up in some places but not others, then realized it was because I used different emails. Crazy! πŸ˜€

And that category box does throw things off. I just seem to have some sort of mental block when it comes to making widgets behave. And to an extent is annoys me that I can’t figure it out! I would also like to figure out how to get things centered, like your archives dropdown box that is off to the left. Drives me nuts. When and if I do, I’ll let you know.

69. Lilianne says:

Love the theme, thanks and Merry Xmas πŸ™‚

Would you please send me the new version as well. For some reason, the home page looses left side bar and shows all on the right one. On other pages it works. Also search does not show up at all.
This is a new blog, so no content yet, but I would like to get it working before I spend too much time adding content.

Thanks

70. Mina says:

Lilianne,

You’ve got mail! πŸ˜€

71. Ricardo G. says:

Hi, Mina:
Thank you for such lovely theme, it’s awsome.
I had the same issue with category field than wlaer did, and my site is in spanish. I would like to know where are all the strings to be translated, so I can translate them. If you want me, I can after send you the spanish strings, unless you managed to use them from the wordpress .mo file.
And a last question. I’d like to replace the header image ΒΏwhere can I do this?
Best regards an thank you again for your work

72. Hi Mina, tried several themes and this one took my fancy, would like to vary the colour tjheme at some point in the future perhaps as a very pale blue or a pale yellow as I have received a few derogatory comments but the theme I do like.

I have changed the header graphics and would like to remove the calendar from the page. Is that simply the case of removing the reverence to the calendar in the style sheet?

Finding my way around but not too au fait with all of this.

Have been having trouble getting google analytics to run on the blog, any ideas how to achieve this? I had ir f=running fine until I changed to your theme bus since, even with reinstalling the code no luck.

Norman

73. Mina says:

Ricardo G – Are you using a spanish version of wordpress or just language files? Wlaer was using the russian version of wordpress and the issue wasn’t able to be resolved. When he switched to the english wp and the updated theme (which I will email you) everything was fine.

As far as where everything that needs to be translated is, I don’t know. I only know english. Maybe someone at the support forums will know more about it.

Norman – To remove the calendar you need to go into area2.php and remove the reference to it there…not the stylesheet.

I don’t know all that much about google analytics, but do know several people running my themes with it working. I just don’t have a clue about this. Sorry.

As you might know by now, there is an updated version that WP has yet to get to to approve. I’ll email it to you.

74. anki says:

hello, I just love your theme Wasteland πŸ™‚ but have some problem, I can not get the search widget on the blog. Do you have any suggestions how I will get it works?
I have tried to get help on the swedish support but I couldn’t to get it to work. Should be very pleased if you have any solution for this little problem I have. πŸ™‚
Have a great weekend,,
regards
anki πŸ™‚

75. Mina says:

Anki,

I’ve emailed you.

76. Marc says:

just revisiting my old question about centering the text above the calendar in area2….

Mina replied:
3) The code for the text above the calendar is:

#wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0 5px 20px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 14px; }

Play with the margin setting until it’s where you want it to be. The order of the settings for the margin are top – right – bottom – left.

Yes, that was the place to fix it. (the css file). I’ve changed mine to:

#wp-calendar caption { color: #533419; text-align: center; width: 80%; margin: 5px 0px 5px 0px; font-family: Times, Verdana,Sans-Serif; font-size: 20px; }

I’m not sure why you had 20px for the left margin, instead of 0px like your right margin.

77. Mina says:

“I’m not sure why you had 20px for the left margin, instead of 0px like your right margin.”

Um…maybe because if I used 0 for my left margin the caption wouldn’t have been placed where I wanted it to be?

78. Marc says:

sorry, i should’ve phrased that differently. I don’t mean to say that there was a mistake or your artistic design is wrong. I love it, personally. I was just sharing. Hey, here’s something else…

Mr Crozier (his area1 text is cut off, or is that just my browser?) asked about that drop down select menu… how about this for a simple solution:

Select Category
A Springboard for:
… You
… Your Family Life
Atheism

I’m thinking that if you put a space in front of “A Springboard”, it will line up above the “… You”.

Just a thought.

79. Marc says:

this is funny…. Mina is using word press which promotes speech. The word cloister is derived from a latin word which could be interpreted as “shut up”.

80. Mina says:

The text in Edwin’s area1 looks fine to me and I’m using Firefox. As for the category names, that would be up to him.

And I interpret the meaning of cloister to be shut away as opposed to shut up.

“To shut away from the world in or as if in a cloister; seclude.”

81. Tammy says:

Mina,

Lovely theme. I was wondering how I can make some small changes.

1. Change my theme photo at top
2. My Title splits on 2 lines (I have 27 character’s including spaces) πŸ™‚
3. How do I enlarge all reading text just a little bit. I have reading glasses and man this type is a little too small for my eyes.
4. I too would like to add additional widgets (or change the ones already there) but when I add them to the sidebars it wipes out the ones you currently have there and the left side bar disappears. I really like the layout as it comes, just need to play with the widgets a little πŸ™‚
5. How do I add to the blog roll?? My brain is fried right now and this is probably an easy one.

Tammy
PS I am running WP 2.7 and love this one.

82. Mina says:

Tammy,

Before I go over your issues I want to tell you that there is a newer version of the theme that I’m still waiting to be approved by WP. I’ll email you a copy of it and I would advise updating your theme before making any modifications. You don’t want to have to do it twice, right? πŸ™‚

Okay for the first 3 you’ll need to be in style.css.

1) Find this line: .header { background: #ebe1c8 url(images/header.jpg) no-repeat; width: 990px; height: 140px; margin: 0 auto 10px auto; padding: 0; float: left; border-bottom: #3f3013 3px double; }

Just change header.jpg to whatever your image is called.

2) Find: .header h1 { width: 500px; padding: 0; margin: 20px 0 0 30px; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Sans-serif; font-size: 3.5em; line-height: 40px; text-align: left; }

You’ll need to change the width value…600px should be enough.

3) In: body { margin: 0; font-size: 76.5%; text-align: center; vertical-align: top; background: #3f3013 url(images/body-bg.jpg) repeat; color: #444; }

Here you’ll change the font-size value. I would advise changing a little at a time until you’re satisfied.

4) The problem you are having with the widgets is a bug in the original version, and will be fixed in the updated version I’ve sent you.

5) In the left hand navigation bar in your Admin screen you’ll see a section titled “Links”. Select “Add New”, enter your information and save.

83. Greg Heather says:

Hi Mina,

I love this theme and I’m using it on my first website. Please forgive me for not sharing the site yet, I’ll post again when I have it running. Would you please sent me your updated version?

Greg

84. Tammy says:

Mina,
You are a gem πŸ™‚

Thanks a million for the info and the zip file.

And I knew I had to have sleepy eyes for #5, ehmmmm.

Thanks again,
Tammy

85. Mina says:

Greg – You’ve got mail my friend.

Tammy – No problem!

86. Tammy says:

Mina,

4) The problem you are having with the widgets is a bug in the original version, and will be fixed in the updated version I’ve sent you.

I installed your new zip file but I am still having problems with adding widgets making the ones in your theme disappear in Sidebar 1.

If you get a moment jump over and look at the one lonely little widget in Sidebar 1 and you’ll see that categories, pages & subscribed disappeared all together. http://www.jttenterprise.com

What am I doing wrong?

Good nite.

Tammy

87. Mina says:

Tammy,

The way WordPress works is that when you add a widget to a sidebar, the default sidebar does disappear and is replaced by the widgets you add.

To keep categories, pages and subscribed along with the media widget you added you’ll need to add those three widgets also.

Widgets are designed to replace what’s in the default sidebar, not add to it.

88. Steve says:

How do I update the welcome message, can’t seem to find it in wordpress anywhere?

89. Steve says:

Got that figured out, have a hover problem with this template though. My text disappears rather than underlines is there a way to fix this?

Also when I go to comments the alignment does not seem to work right. That is the items on the Right hand column drop to the bottom for lack of room

Love the color and style of this template so would like to work out the bugs.

90. Steve says:

Updated all the Hover colors in the style sheet and they display now, the right thing seems to have cleared itself.

This is a fanatic style sheet, thank. Sorry for the novice post, sometimes it helps just to type it out so you can think about a solution.

91. Tammy says:

Ah ha!!! Gotcha.

Duh me πŸ™‚

94. Marc says:

Hmmm. I said earlier “Mr Crozier (his area1 text is cut off, or is that just my browser?) ” and I started looking at other sites. I found that it makes a difference if you have the view settings in firefox set to default. I notice Mina’s page wasn’t showing all the area1 text either. So I changed my view settings on firefox for the first time, and now I am able to see the whole picture. =)

Happy New Year to ya.

95. Mina says:

Hey Marc, very good info for others that were having the same issue as you. Thanks for coming back and letting us know. πŸ˜€

96. Amber says:

Mina,
Let me first say that you go ABOVE AND BEYOND to answer everyone’s questions. As I troll through your responses I am learning a lot. I thought I would ask for the new theme as well…and then read through the rest!

Keep up the good work!

97. Bill says:

Mina, from the first day I downloaded it I knew that Wasteland was going to be the theme that I was going to use for my Geocaching website called thegeocacher.com. I’ve tweaked it a bit with a couple of widgets, added a date to the header, changed the search just a bit but I really think that it fits well with what I am trying to accomplish. The earth tones portray the feel of “geo” for me as well.

I’m probably NOT done tweaking yet. Still fighting with centering things…. It was so much easier when I could just use the <center tag in HTML instead of all this CSS stuff.

Again, thanks for a great theme… I look forward to what more you might have to offer.

-= Bill =-
http://www.thegeocacher.com

98. Mina says:

Amber – I try my best to get to questions people have although I have to admit, no always as quickly as I’d like. πŸ˜€ And forgive me if I’m misunderstanding (I am BEAT…TGIF!!!!!) but if you’re asking me to send you the updated version of the theme, you don’t need to ask. WordPress FINALLY approved all the updated themes and they are now available for download from the theme directory. And if you weren’t asking me to send it, then ignore all I just wrote! πŸ˜€

Bill – The earthy feel is exactly what I get from it too. And you technicallly can still use the

thing, you site just won’t validate. To be honest if you ran The Cloisters through validation it would fail miserably. πŸ˜€

And to both of you, thank you for your kind words. That means alot.

99. Amber says:

Then we’re all good since I just downloaded today, I should be fine!

…I’m just dinkng my way through to see what I can change, add, etc. Fun times! I’ll check back often for more comments…

Thanks again…

Amber

100. Amber says:

Mina, one last thing. I redid my header with my title, and I’m trying to get my title that is on your header off. Is there a way? I’m sure it’s easy, but I’m not getting it. No hurry!!

Amber

101. Mina says:

Amber,

I emailed you because code doesn’t always show up here.

102. Josephine says:

I’m creating my very first blog and fell in love with your theme from the beginning. It’s going to be a solid waste site … and I’m using a theme called Wasteland; that’s cool stuff. I have version 1.3 – is that the newest one? I really like the font used in your header, not the gothic one, but the one that is used to spell “WASTELAND.” Is that a commercially available font?

103. aurora says:

Hi Mina, I found Wasteland great too! πŸ™‚

I have some problems with the Search Widget (I can’t display it) and the category field (it’s full of stange text…).
Could you send me an e-mail with the solutions?
I think I need the zip file with the theme’s upgrade and the right translation (in Italian) file.
Is it true?

I hope my english is not too awful…

104. Mina says:

Josephine – Wow…my theme on a solid waste site…I think I actually take that as a compliment. And my mother always did say I’d end up in the crapper! πŸ˜€ Seriously though, I’m glad you like it!

And yes 1.3 is the latest version. The font used for the original Wasteland header is called 28 Days Later I believe and I think I did get it online (free). Try Dafont.com and if it’s not there, do a Google search.

aurora – It would help if you had a link to the site so that I could see whats going on. It’s kind of hard to know based on what you’ve said. And you can download the newest version (if you don’t have it) from the WordPress Theme Directory. As for translations…I can’t help with that. I only speak English, sorry.

105. aurora says:

Hi Mina,
the website I put in the field below is my provisory domain: you can see what I have done so far.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Italian πŸ™‚
I’ll try to explain my problems with two examples.

I refer to something you wrote to other users:

wlaer wrote:

Mina anwered to her:
“[…]Yeah, the search widget thing was a bug that showed up after the theme was made public. I just submitted a fixed version to the Theme Directory today but they have to review it before it will be available. With that said, I’m emailing the updated version (zip file) to you at the email you used here. Please let me know if you don’t get it or if you have any other issues[…]”

—-

I tihnk I have this two problems too, and so maybe I need the zip file with the theme’s upgrade and the right translation file.
Is that true?

Thank you in advance,
Aurora.

106. aurora says:

Mina, I just download the 1.3 version of Wasteland from WordPress.org! πŸ˜€
With this new version I’ll solve both my problems?

107. Mina says:

aurora,

The new version will solve the search widget/sidebar problem.

The other issue is more complicated. Are you using an Italian version of WordPress or just a language file?

wlaer was using a Russian version of the WordPress software and the problem couldn’t be resolved. When he switched to the English version of WordPress, with Russian language files everything was fine.

Forgive me if I sound confused, it’s very early for me. πŸ™‚

108. aurora says:

Hi Mina,

I’m using just a language file (I installed it in the English version of WordPress).

Maybe I could solve this problem modifying the code. Couldn’t I?

Thank you in advance,
Aurora.

109. Mina says:

aurora,

Are you still having problems with the updated version of the theme (ver 1.3)?

110. Bob McPhee says:

Hello Mina
Wasteland is a perfect fit for my page thank you for creating it and sharing it as well. I will be posting some vintage railway photo’s so this is the perfect colour scheme .. I am trying to figure out how to allow someone to post comments like I am doing on your page now. If you have any suggestions on how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Bob

111. aurora says:

Wow Mina! πŸ˜€

The new version of Wasteland solved all my problems!
Thanks a lot!

Kisses
Aurora

P.S.: I put in the field below my actual domain: soon I’ll relocate there my blog.

112. Mina says:

Bob – I can’t wait to see that pictures. I grew up in NE Pennsylvania and although the trains weren’t really running anymore by the time I came along I still remember the stories about my great-grandfather’s time as a conductor on the line between PA and upstate New York. πŸ˜€

But to answer your question, I went to your site and noticed that you required folks to login before they can post comments. Did you want it like that? If not go into Admin >> Settings >> General and make sure the box by “Membership” is unchecked. You can also go into Admin >> Settings >> Discusson to fine tune your settings. And FYI – if you have open comments I would advise activating the Akismet plugin if you already haven’t…It’s a godsend for catching spam.

aurora – Once you said you were using the English version of WP I knew the new version would take care of things. πŸ˜€

113. aurora says:

There’s another a little problem:
now I can display the widget Search, but it has not the header.

I added the header in searchform.php:

But there’s a strange line above the widget…

Cuold you have a look at my website?

Thank you in advance,
Aurora

114. aurora says:

Sorry: I wrote the code in my post, but… there is not!

115. aurora says:

Ok, excuse me, I solved my problem:
I added only the code for the header (the one among the tags h2) and all work fine.

Thank you again, Mina! πŸ˜€

Kisses
Aurora

116. Mina says:

Wow aurora, you have it solved before I even saw this. Excellent! πŸ˜€

117. Evangeline says:

Great theme Mina! I’m using it for my website. I am running into a bit of trouble: I want to make my “category” section a pull-down menu rather than listing them (I have 30 or so categories–listing them takes a lot of space). I found a code, but can’t figure out what to do to make my categories appear in the pull-down menu.

118. Mina says:

Evangeline,

Thanks, I’m glad you like it! Now for the categories, if you are using a widget all you need to do is expand the category widget (it’ll say “edit” on the right side) and you’ll see 3 options:

*Show as drop down
*Show post counts
*Show hierarchy

Just check “Show as drop down” and you’re set.

119. Annemieke says:

Hi Mina,

First I want to thank you for your very tasteful themes, I really like them a lot. I chose Surreal Reality and I am very happy with it.
But now I have a question and so far I could not find an answer to that. Is it possible to get rid of the author box and if so how.

Thank you very much,
Annemieke

120. Mina says:

Annemieke – Thank you, I appreciate hearing that.

For your issue I’ve emailed you because this site apparently doesn’t like me posting code.

121. Evangeline says:

Thanks Mina! I wasn’t sure whether changing the widgets would work on this theme.

122. Annemieke says:

Mina, thank you very much for your fast reaction. Indeed very easy to do,
it worked great.
It is not that I don’t like the author box, I think it is a very nice
feature, but before it appears I should have really written something.

So thank you for the solution and also for the wonderful theme,
Annemieke

123. aurora says:

Hi Mina.

I am in trouble again: I thought I could solve this problem by myself, but I’m not able to do that…

There has to be some problem with the translation file:
if I click on a Category or on an entry of the Archive, i read under the header these lines:

“Project-Id-Version: WordPress 2.7 Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: wp-polyglots@lists.automattic.com POT-Creation-Date: 2008-12-11 00:55+0000 PO-Revision-Date: 2008-12-11 09:02+0100 Last-Translator: SteveAgl Language-Team: Italian (www.wordpress-it.it) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=n != 1; X-Poedit-Language: Italian X-Poedit-Country: ITALY X-Poedit-SourceCharset: utf-8 X-Poedit-KeywordsList: __;_e X-Poedit-Basepath: .     How can I delete it?

I’m afraid my English is not very good, but have a look at my website and you’ll understand what I mean… πŸ™‚

Thank you in advance,
Aurora.

124. Mina says:

Aurora,

Can you send me the language files you’re using? Maybe if I install them myself I can see if there is something in the theme that can be fixed.

125. aurora says:

Ok Mina, thanks a lot!

I can’t find the language file…
Can I send you the entire Wasteland theme’s foder?

126. Matt says:

Mina:

Fantastic theme. Thank you.

I tried to fix the I.E. title not showing issue as you spelled out below, but it didn’t work (looks great in Firefox). Did I miss something else?
delete these parts only and save:
text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden;

Also, how do I condense the blog entries on the home page & limit them in number as well (like yours)? I am brand spanking new to the blogging world, including this entry.

Thanks – Matt

127. Mina says:

Aurora – Yes, zip up the entire folder and email it to me. Thanks

Matt – Glad you like it and Welcome to WordPress and The Cloisters. πŸ˜€

Somehow you seem to have the old version of the theme, that’s why you’re having the IE blog title issue. Go to the Official Theme Directory (link on my front page) and download the latest version which is version 1.3. That will take care of that problem plus a couple others you might not be aware of yet. πŸ™‚

To limit the number of posts on the front page you need to Admin >> Settings >> Reading. In the second section from the top you’ll see “Blog Pages Show At Most” and a place to input the number of posts you want per page (I believe the default is 10?), save changes and you’re done.

128. Matt says:

Thank you! Amazing, but I come home and the title is showing up now in IE since making the change. I just downloaded from WordPress (couple weeks ago), so I’ll have to see why it’s not the most up to date one and change accordingly. I feel bad for asking the 2nd part. If I had looked a little harder … Thanks for the quick response. Very nice work – Matt

129. Mina says:

Hey Matt,

I’m glad it’s worked out. The updated version became available on December 29 and I would still advise upgrading because there were a couple other bugs that were fixed in the later version that might cause you problems down the line.

And don’t worry about your 2nd question…that’s how we learn, right? πŸ˜€

130. Marilyn says:

Mina, I have a problem in that my Blog Title does not print the bottom part of the Y in Marilyn. It makes it look like a V. Hopefully you can help me fix this.

131. Marilyn says:

Oh, by the way, I meant to tell you that I tried 44 different themes and yours was the only one that set up my blog the way that I wanted it. I just need to get the header picture changed or get my Title to print out right and it will be perfect. Well, except that I might try to change the background colors if I can figure out how to do it.

Your theme is really great.

132. Mina says:

Marilyn,

Wow, 44 other themes? I am seriously honored. πŸ˜€ And I love the blue text you’ve added, it’s lovely.

Go into style.css and look for this line:

.header .description { width: 500px; margin: 0 0 0 60px; padding: 0; font-size: 1.5em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Georgia; color: #3f3013; text-align: left; text-transform: lowercase; }

And change the top margin setting (the 1st 0) to 10px or a little more if needed. That should do it.

133. Marilyn says:

Thank you on the compliments, Mina. I couldn’t see where my links were so changed them to blue to be able to see them. All the rest came with it. LOL I like the color combinations too.

Ok, I did what you said and it didn’t do a thing. I even went even higher with no effect to it. I have tried changing every top and bottom I can find to no effect. It looks like such a perfect V that I thought I had typed it wrong. I went back to check and it was right in the description. I use IE, could this be the problem?

I love the way yours looks I would love to be able to get that header into my paint program and add my blog name to it and just use it that way. I tried putting my logo picture into the blog but did not know exactly where I was supposed to put the picture. I made a folder called images but that didn’t seem to help. I looked in the other folders for header.jpg but couldn’t find one with it. I know how to do this type of stuff for websites but seem to be a total flop with working with the blogs.

134. Mina says:

Marilyn,

Hmm…not being able to see it for myself makes it hard. πŸ™ I think it might be IE’s fault…IE and I have a very intense love hate relationship! πŸ˜€

okay try this:

.header h1 { width: 500px; padding: 0; margin: 20px 0 0 30px; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Sans-serif; font-size: 3.5em; line-height: 38px; text-align: left; }

And where you see line-height: 38px; increase the 38 and see if that helps.

Now about the header, you said you created a folder called images…you shouldn’t need to do that. Inside the Wasteland folder should already be an images folder and your header image will go in there.

Please keep me updated on how it goes.

135. Marilyn says:

You will laugh when you hear what I was doing. I was going into the file system online and not into the theme folder wasteland and then images. Now I know what to do. LOL I am going to work on it now. Wish me luck

136. Mina says:

Lots of Good Luck to you!!! πŸ˜€

137. Marilyn says:

Ok, Mina, got my header changed to match my webpage. Got the background on sides and the content area changed.

1. Now to change the border top and bottom of page, I need to know where to change the color of the text as home and Abouit fade out with the Aqua color.

2. Also need to figure out how to change the background and title-bar colors of the widget boxes and welcome box.

3. Is there a way to make the post titles a little larger?

4. And, last but not least. Need to know how to change the color of the text in my posts (non-linked) to black so it will show up better.

Thank you for all the help your are giving me. I had never done a blog before. I have created my own websites though.

Oh, I am loving your theme more and more as I change it to be me. It is so versatile and can work for almost anyone.

138. Marilyn says:

Oh, yes, is there any way to make your tags be drop down also? It would make my blog look so much neater.

139. Mina says:

Good job so far Marilyn. πŸ™‚

1. Not sure exactly what you mean about the border top and bottom. There is only a border around the whole thing. To change that look for these lines (the second with the * is for IE):

#main_content { background: #ebe1c8; float: left; margin: 0 auto 0 auto; padding: 0; width: 1000px; border: #3f3013 3px double; }

*html #main_content { padding-bottom: 10px; border: #fff 3px double; }

At the end you’ll see the code for the border, you can delete it to remove it completely or change the color or whatever.

I’m also not sure what text color you’re referring to, I’ve been to your site and can’t see where the text is fading.

2. To change the background of the top section and the sidebars go into style.css and find these lines and change the colors of the 3 background sections:

.top-section .area { background: #ded3b7; float: left; width: 230px; height: 150px; margin-left: 5px; padding: 0; border: #d5c7a4 1px solid; }
.top-section .area.extra { background: #ded3b7; width: 535px; height: 150px; margin-left: 5px; padding: 0; }

#left_sidebar ul li, #right_sidebar ul li { background: #ded3b7; display: block; padding: 0 0 3px 0; margin: 0; list-style: none; }

The title bars (headings) are currently images and can be found here:

#left_sidebar h2, #right_sidebar h2, #commentblock h2 { font-size: 1.06em; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 15px auto 5px auto; padding: 3px 3px 3px 0px; text-align: center; background: #b3a381 url(images/cat-bg.jpg) repeat; border-top: #7c7953 1px solid; border-bottom: #7c7953 1px solid; }

Look for the section ‘background’ and either change the image or remove the reference to it and change the color.

3. Find this line and change the font size:

.post h2 { font-size: 1.5em; margin: 0 0 0 5px; padding-top: 5px; }

4. For the body text it’s this line:

body { margin: 0; font-size: 76.5%; text-align: center; vertical-align: top; background: #3f3013 url(images/body-bg.jpg) repeat; color: #444; }

At the end you’ll see color: #444; Change it to #000 for black.

And lastly the tags – There is no way that I know of the make tags dropdown, sorry.

Whew…I’m going to bed now, I’m wiped out! πŸ˜€

140. Marilyn says:

Ok, I have her to where I want her. You can come and see what I have done with your creation. Hopefully you like it. I know I do.

thank you for all of your help. Sorry they were such hair puller questions. I know it is like ripping your baby apart. I will write in my blog later this week about my new theme and let them know how wonderful your were to help me.

141. Mina says:

Marilyn,

It’s fantastic! πŸ˜€

I enjoy seeing how someone can take a theme I made and turn it into their own. Because after all that is the whole idea of blogs and websites…they should express the personality of their “owner”.

I don’t feel like my baby’s been ripped apart, I feel like she’s in a home where someone loves her. πŸ™‚

I’m using this one right now. Its wonderful and its gotten a ton of compliments from my readers, you’re really good, thank you.

144. Mina says:

Thank you, I’m glad it’s working for you! πŸ˜€

145. Jonahh says:

Great theme! Definitely some uniqueness in it, and a wicked ‘toy’ to learn the whole coding stuff with… Thanks a bunch!

146. Mina says:

Jonahh,

Glad you like it. And I love what you’ve done with it at your site. πŸ˜€

147. Sean says:

I deleted the left sidebar, because I preffered a cleaner look, however, I need the posts to stretch out and fill the page..How can i fix this?

Thanks

148. Mina says:

Sean,

Go into style.css and find these lines (the second one is for IE):

#container { background: #ebe1c8; float: left; width: 530px; margin: 0 10px 0 7px; padding: 0 10px 10px 10px; }

*html #container { width: 520px; margin: 0 10px 0 2px; padding: 0 10px 10px 10px; }

You need to the the width value, I wouldn’t go more than 730px (720px for IE) though it’s really up to you.

149. Sean says:

Thanks a lot, Ill try tommorow, you rock!! This theme rocks too!!

150. Sean says:

OK, I couldnt find the second line, but it seems to have worked out.

Where do I edit or add the links that are underneath the header? Thanks again,

Sean

151. Mina says:

Sean,

The second line is at the bottom, you need to edit that also or it won’t show right in IE. Look down the bottom.

And for the links under the header, that is menu.php.

152. aurora says:

Hi Mina,

finally I inaugurated my blog!

Tank you for your wonderful theme and for all your help! πŸ™‚

Congratulations Aurora! Good luck with the blog. πŸ˜€

154. Marilyn says:

Hi, Mina, I’m back again. I hope with a simple question. How do I make the post font Veranda, 12pt?

By the way, I have gotten quite a few compliments on my new blog theme. You are really a wonderful person to have helped me get it to where it is now. I just love my new blog theme so much and am so proud of the way that you helped me to create the image for me.

155. Mina says:

Hi Marilyn,

I am so glad that you’re happy with your site, and I was happy to help you get there. πŸ˜€

Okay to change the font is pretty easy. Go into style.css and find these lines:

body, address, dd, dl, hr, p, form { font-family: “Tahoma, Trebuchet MS”, Verdana, Arial, Sans-serif; margin: 0; padding: 0; }

.entry { font-size: 1.02em; background: url(images/dot.gif) repeat-x scroll 0pt 100% !important; line-height: 1.42em; padding: 0 0 40px 0; }

On the first line you can simply delete the references to “Tahoma, Trebuchet MS”, and in the second line change 1.02em; to 12px;

That should do it.

156. Marilyn says:

Thank you for your help. I really do appreciate it. Again, I love your theme and love my new blog.

157. Al says:

I love this theme, although I edited it to fit my needs. I’m trying to figure out how to add a custom link (to a sub-directory gallery or forum) to the navigation & sidebar pages. When I add the link to menu.php, it doesn’t show up. Any suggestions?

158. Viriatha says:

Hey, Mina. I want to say thank you for making a great theme and then for answering all our pesky comments πŸ™‚ I had some trouble at first but went back and found my answers easily. Free themes are great but so many of them are never supported and the authors often don’t bother to answer concerns.

Thank you again!

159. Tim says:

Hi Mina

Wow. Wow. Wow!! Not only a brilliant theme (front and back end), but also you support everyone and take the time to help with the tiniest of issues! That’s incredibly unusual and I reckon you deserve the award I just invented right now on the spot – You are proudly awarded the Free Theme Creator of the Year award! Woooo!

Cheers,

Thank you in advance!

163. Narelle says:

Hi Mina,

Firstly thanks so much for the lovely theme ‘Wasteland.’ I’m using it on my site. I was also using Surreal Reality for a while which I may actually go back too, I love them both and really appreciate your aesthetics and love the colours. My question on Wasteland is how do I enter text in the ‘Welcome to Our Site’ box? I don’t see anything in my Dashboard that allows me to enter text in that box so am wondering if I enter the text in CSS or on one of the templates? I’m a true beginner on CSS and web design in general so any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Mina!!
I want to start by saying I love this theme!!! I’m new to wp and I’m trying to wrap my brain around everything it has to offer. I’m having a few issues and I’m not sure if it is the theme or just me.

1st issue is that when I try to password protect a page im getting problems when trying to access it. If I am logged in to my wp dashboard and then try to visit my site and then enter the page that is password protected, it just send me back to my dashboard. If I log out all together and try the same it just takes me to my log in page.

2nd, I would like to setup up users so they can leave comments, but I am finding issues there too. They can register but, can’t seem to post or do much more. Any help would be appreciated or direction to the right help. Thanks
Wayne

166. anki says:

Hello Mina, I just love your wasteland theme. But I wonder,is it possible to have a area 3 in the theme, I mean on the right side after the area 2.
My idΓ©a is to have gallery in area 3, with my latest picture in the gallery, and I wonder if it’s possible to have the two widgets in same height? As it’s now the right one is little bit more from the top.
Hope you understand what I mean. πŸ™‚

thanks any way for a great theme,,

have a nice weekend… πŸ™‚

167. anki says:

have a great weekend.. πŸ™‚

168. Mina says:

You have a good weekend too.

169. Marlene says:

I love this theme. I may use this on my blog soon as I’m actually looking for one that would fit for personal blogging.

Hi I am now to this. I Was woundering if you could telll me how to change the lipon text on the home page. Do i have to have a html or what? thank you for your time.

171. Tina says:

Wow, I am so appreciative of not only a great theme, but the amazing support you provide to help people! So glad I clicked on the link to come here.
I’ve tried to search for the answer before bugging you, but I can’t seem to figure it out on my own. Hoping you don’t mind answering a couple simple questions.

1) How do I change the word “Home” in the menu bar? I’d like to be able to use a different word, or at least change the first letter to lowercase.
2) How do I control the order of the pages (from L-R) in the menu bar? I tried changing the page order, but that doesn’t seem to affect the menu bar which still reads alphabetically.

Thanks so much in advance.
Tina

172. Tina says:

Awesome – that did it! Thanks SO much for the fast response.

173. Mike says:

Hey Mina,

I too, love this theme. I have added graphical enhancements for an author friend I am doing this blog for. http://www.faithhunter.net/wp/ I saw an earlier post to the problem I’m having, but did not see the answer.

The link bar across the top of the page where the page links are shown is pushing to far to the right. How do I fix this?

Other than that I was able to figure out everything else I think. Did I mention that I love this theme? I think I’m also gonna use a different graphical version of this same theme for my own blog too. It is here http://mikepruette.com/blog/

Thanks for the SUPER support you give.

Mike

174. Tina says:

Hi Mina –
I’m back again. How do I remove the border from images when they are hyperlinked to another site or page?
Thanks,
Tina

175. Tina says:

oh, does it look that way? when I look at the page “who” I still see a border around the “post-it” note. The logos I just dumped into one big JPG in photoshop.

176. Shan says:

You know that Welcome thing how do I remove it or edit it?

177. Dawn says:

Hello Mina,
First off I want to say I just love your themes, they are the best that I have found, there isn’t a thing I want to change about them, the hard part was deciding which one to use.

Second can you answer a question for me? I looked at all the posts and haven’t found an answer yet.

How do you get title off the header? I added my own title to the header but the link title is still there, I know it is somewhere in the header.php but I just can figure out where.

Thank you,
Dawn

178. Dawn says:

Thanks Mina that worked like a charm.
Thank you for being here to support your thems.

I found a bug in comments.php.

At the very bottom of comments.php, it should read:

instead of:

In the case that someone is not logged in, the div structure gets split up and the right sidebar appears under the comments instead of to the right of them because it thinks that right-sidebar is still within one of the parent divs.

For me, it was only a problem with the following combination:
1) only when user not logged in (and using sidebar login plugin if that matters)
2) only on the single post page where i lists the comments on the post
3) only in Firefox

IE ignored the bad nesting and showed it correctly. πŸ˜‰

Hope this helps someone!

181. Obsessiono says:

Hi Mina,

I love your theme, I wanted to say thanks. I also wanted to ask, how do I insert a custom field for the image in this theme? Some themes it’s the word image, others it’s img, some it’s Image, etc. What I am hoping to do is have a smaller picture on the front, that goes into a bigger picture.

Also do I use the whole url or just the url from wp? I have played around with it, and I did read the posts here, but I did not find it.

Thanks.

182. Obsessiono says:

Thanks I will try this and see if it works. Your themes are just easy to understand and really easy to work with. I again thank you for taking the time with these. They really do look great. πŸ™‚

Hi Mina, back to working on my blog. Do you know how I can make my text bar at top listing pages drop down as some pages have sub pages.

Thanks again,

187. Hi Mina,

I would like to set up my links in the text to have underlines. Even with the different shade I don’t think the links stand out as links. What do I need to do for the links to be underlined?

Thanks.

188. Also, is this theme compatible with the latest WordPress.org platform?

189. kathy says:

I loved the 5-column layout, and like the colors, too, but I’m using WP on my own website as a Garden blog, and wanted a more “gardeny” look. I’ve worked through most of the issues I had, but one is really puzzling me. I use the “more” tag to show excerpts on my front page. When a reader goes to the single post page, it works fine, but on the “category” pages, there is a little […] where the more tag should be, and it isn’t clickable. The post is just cut off where the more tag should be. Any clue how to fix that?

Thanks for your time and effort in making themes. Having spent an eternity trying to just modify one, I can appreciate what it takes.

190. kathy says:

Well duh! Thanks for fixing it. Appreciate the help. Still very new to WP, so sometimes the obvious isn’t quite as obvious as it should be.
Thanks.
